Back on the Winning TrackAfter a two game slide Mountain Vista came in to the with its first real adversity of the young inaugural season. With a non-conference game against Summit and a conference match-up against Cheyenne Mountain there was an opportunity for the Golden Eagles to once again establish their wining ways. The week started with a 9-1 dismantling of Summit. In the game the Eagles scored goals in every period, including two power play goals in the first and two short handed goals in the second. Seven different players scored in a game where Vista out shot Summit 28-14 and had a shutout until a goal with just a minute to go. Though not a conference game it was the Eagle's most complete game of the season. On Wednesday the Eagles traveled to Colorado Springs to take on 2-4-1 Cheyenne Mountain in a conference game. The game was a hard fought game that saw Vista out shoot Cheyenne Mountain 31-18 on their way to a 5-2 conference win. The scoring included three power play goals as Vista scored on three out of eight power play chances. The Indians kept the game close until mid way in the third when Vista scored to more goals to put the game out of reach and improve their conference record to 3-1-1 and an overall record of 6-2-1. The next game for the Golden Eagles will be a conference game against 5-3 (3-1) Valor Christian. That game will be Saturday January 21st at 8:00PM at the Ice Ranch in Littleton. Great first week of MVHS hockey for the Golden Eagles! |
Tough Weekend for MVHSIt was a tough weekend for the Golden Eagles. Friday night the faced off against 6-0 Regis in a non-conference match-up of undefeated teams. After a scoreless first period the Eagles put up two goals in the second while only giving up a single goal to Regis in the same period. Going into the third period with a 2-1 lead and playing well it seemed Vista was on the verge of staying undefeated. Then in the third period Regis scored three straight goals in under two minutes to take a 4-2 lead they never relinquished. This game dropped the Eagles to 5-1-1, but did not negatively impact their conference standings. Saturday night Vista took the ice against conference leader Machebeuf in only their fourth conference game of the season. Coming into the game Machebeuf was 4-1 in conference and the Golden Eagles were 2-0-1. Machebeuf took the lead at 3:22 in the first with the period's only goal. Vista got on the board in the second with a goal at 5:18, but it was quickly answered with a goal less than a minute later and Machebeuf's third goal a minute later. The Eagles were down 1-3 heading into the third and scored a quick third period goal at 1:07 in. Even though Vista out shot Machebeuf 32-24 in the game they were unable to get the equalizer in the third and dropped their second straight game and first conference game 3-2. The team will be back at it with a non-conference game Monday against Summit and then a conference game in Colorado Springs against Cheyenne Mountain, who is just one point behind Vista in the current conference standings. Vista Stays UnbeatenMountain Vista moved to 4-0-1 over all and 3-0 in conference with a 5-3 win over Air Academy Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles started fast scoring the first goal just a 1:17 into the game. That first goal was followed by three more goals in the first period to give Vista a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period, including two power play goals. Going into the third period Air Academy was still down 4-1 after scoring a power play goal of their own in the second. In the second period Air Academy was only able to take advantage of one of four power play opportunities given up by the Golden Eagles. The third period saw more trips to the penalty box by Vista as they amassed 18 minutes of penalties including two five minute majors and one short 5-on-3 opportunity for Air Academy that provided them the opportunity to pull within one goal at 4-3 at 5 1/2 minutes into the third on their second power play goal in less than a minute. Mountain Vista finally got the insurance goal at 8:11 in the third when they scored shorthanded. They hung on for the rest of the third while for the most part playing shorthanded from the 10 minute mark on. The loss dropped Air Academy to 4-3 (1-2 in conference), while continued the Golden Eagles' unbeaten streak at five as the move to 4-0-1 (3-0 in conference). Next up is a non-conference game against undefeated Regis (6-0), who currently leads the Foothills conference, at 5:45PM on Friday at Family Sports Ice Arena. |
